RedBrowser, il trojan che vi azzera il credito

Un nuovo trojan russo che funziona su (quasi) tutti gli smartphone che supportano Java fa finta di essere un programma per scaricare siti via SMS. In realtà invia un numero infinito di costosissimi SMS (fino a sei dollari USA) a numeri di aziende russe - apparentemente ignare dell'operato del trojan - che vendono suonerie polifoniche e roba del genere.

Grazie al social engineering il trojan convince gli utenti che i SMS in uscita sono legittimi e gratuiti, quindi nessuno li ferma.

F-Secure ha un'analisi che spiega sommariamente l'operato del trojan. Quello che non dice è che le aziende a cui corrispondono i numeri ad addebito elevato offrono anche un servizio di affiliazione, che in teoria potrebbe consentire ai creatori del trojan di guadagnare una percentuale sul maltolto.

L'unica buona notizia è che quei numeri ad addebito elevato si raggiungono solo dalla Russia, ma quanto ci vorrà prima che qualcuno si inventi un trojan analogo anche per l'Italia?

Ho notato questo annuncio su Bugtraq, utile a chiunque stia studiando il fenomeno delle botnet:

Niente paura, la seconda parte di un articolo su "come attaccare chi vi attacca" pubblicato alcuni giorni fa da Securityfocus spiega come volgere la situazione a vostro favore e prendere il controllo della botnet.

The fun part starts when we want to take over the very botnet that an attacker controls. This is mainly done in the following way: first, we capture one of the bots of the attacker. This is rather simple since the bots are constantly spreading, and it is easy to get a sample of a bot. Via reverse engineering, we can retrieve all of the sensitive information of a botnet. [...] With this information, we can now impersonate a valid bot and become part of the botnet. This allows us to observe everything inside the botnet: we can see the commands issued by the attacker, estimate the size of the botnet if the C&C server is not configured to prevent this, and more.
