Cyberwarfare: due nuovi fronti per la Cina

A poche ore dallo stand off con Google, che minaccia di chiudere le sue operazioni in Cina dopo la denuncia di attacchi informatici provenienti dal territorio cinese, il Paese del Sol Levante è alle prese con un nuovo fronte di cyberwarfare: l'Iran.

Ieri il maggiore motore di ricerca cinese, Baidu, ha subito un attacco di domain hijacking da parte di un gruppo che si fa chiamare "Iranian Cyber Army".

In a statement yesterday, Baidu apologized to Chinese netizens for the inconvenience caused by the cyber attack.

It noted that attackers did not try to break into the servers of Baidu but attacked the domain name registrar used by Baidu, which is based in the US. "It is a new phenomenon and sounds an alarm (for online security)," it said. 

At about 7:40 am, Baidu went offline and at times displayed an image consisting of Iran's national flag, words in Farsi and a torn national flag of Israel, a result of Baidu.com being redirected to a website located in the Netherlands.

A screenshot of the defaced site showed an announcement in English that read: "This site has been hacked by Iranian Cyber Army". The sentence below declared in Farsi the establishment of "Cyber Iran to protest the intervention of foreign and Israeli sites in our internal affairs and distribution of false news".

The Iranian embassy in Beijing rejected any speculation that the cyber group is related to its government and warned that someone may use the attack to damage the friendly relations between China and Iran.

Non poteva ovviamente sfuggirmi questa ANSA di oggi:

(ANSA) - PECHINO, 12 SET - Gli Usa e altre 'potenze ostili' hanno carpito importanti segreti militari alla Cina attraverso la rete Internet. Lo ha affermato in un articolo comparso su una rivista del Partito Comunista Cinese il viceministro per l'informazione Lou Qinjian. L'articolo e' comparso dopo che Pechino e' stata accusata di aver violato i computer dei governi di Germania, Usa, Francia e Gran Bretagna. Il viceministro invoca la creazione di un'agenzia unica per la censura sulla rete.

Un più che naturale follow-up alle notizie degli ultimi giorni.

La sindrome cinese

Continua quella che sembra essere una vera e propria ondata di paura nei confronti degli hacker cinesi. The Times, una fonte più che autorevole, afferma di essere entrato in possesso di un rapporto del Pentagono che delinea le future attività cinesi sul fronte della guerra informatica agli Stati Uniti.

Il rapporto rappresenterebbe una situazione di sostanziale aggressione da parte della Cina alle difese tattiche statunitensi:

Chinese military hackers have prepared a detailed plan to disable America’s aircraft battle carrier fleet with a devastating cyber attack [...].

Oltre a un piano strategico che ha tanto il sapore di conquista del mondo:

The blueprint for such an assault, drawn up by two hackers working for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), is part of an aggressive push by Beijing to achieve “electronic dominance” over each of its global rivals by 2050, particularly the US, Britain, Russia and South Korea.

Il tutto ovviamente condito da un resoconto delle varie aggressioni subite negli ultimi tempi:

The Pentagon logged more than 79,000 attempted intrusions in 2005. About 1,300 were successful, including the penetration of computers linked to the Army’s 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions and the 4th Infantry Division. In August and September of that year Chinese hackers penetrated US State Department computers in several parts of the world. Hundreds of computers had to be replaced or taken offline for months. Chinese hackers also disrupted the US Naval War College’s network in November, forcing the college to shut down its computer systems for several weeks.

Per non parlare ovviamente del recente attacco al Pentagono.

Ora, ferma restando la serietà del Times, temo stia iniziando una vera e propria strumentalizzazione di questo genere di incursioni telematiche da parte di alcuni ambienti del DoD. In qualsiasi Paese i generali amano far risaltare situazioni di possibile emergenza quando sono alla ricerca di fondi per le loro strutture. Battere la grancassa sugli hacker cinesi può essere un buon modo per ottenere maggiori risorse di quelle stanziate per la guerra elettronica.

Del resto non si capisce come mai chi di dovere caschi dalle nuvole solo oggi. I segnali erano presenti da tempo. Ricordate questa notizia che avevo riportato oltre due anni fa? Gli Usa temono cyberspie cinesi a un passo da casa

Fu la notizia che inaugurò la sezione "cyberwarfare" di questo sito, che tanto si è riempita negli ultimi giorni.

Prove di anti-cyber-terrorismo in India

Mentre la Cina attacca (?) gli USA, l'India prova a difendersi dal terrorismo. Lo riferisce Bruce Schneier sul suo blog, che a sua volta riporta una notizia pubblicata dal sito indiano MiDDay:

Mumbai police will have access to new software connected to 500 cyber cafes in the city that will send them logs

In sostanza la polizia di Mumbai (ex Bombay) installerà un software in 500 Internet cafè che le permetterà di monitorare le attività terroristiche.

The police needs to install programs that will capture every key stroke at regular interval screen shots, which will be sent back to a server that will log all the data.

La logica è che se i terroristi temono di essere rintracciati usando la connessione Internet di casa o da amici/conoscenti, in un Internet cafè sarebbero protetti dall'anonimato.

Vijay Mukhi, President of the Foundation for Information Security and Technology says, “The terrorists know that if they use machines at home, they can be caught. Cybercafes therefore give them anonymity.”

E da oggi ovviamente qualsiasi terrorista che dovesse pianificare un attentato ci penserà due volte prima di usare un Internet cafè di Mumbai. Di conseguenza ecco l'ennesimo esempio di come una misura estrema presentata come mezzo di contrasto al terrorismo finisce per essere usata contro la criminalità comune. Oltre che ovviamente per rendere la vita più difficile al resto della popolazione.

All cyber cafes in the city will now need a police license to keep their business going. All cafes need to register at the police headquarters and provide details on the number of computers installed, type of computers and technical details like the IP address of each machine.

Hacker cinesi violano il Pentagono

Alla fine è accaduto quello che molti temevano da tempo, gli hacker cinesi sono riusciti a violare la rete del Pentagono.

Il fatto risale al giugno scorso, ma ne è stata data notizia solo ieri:

The Pentagon acknowledged shutting down part of a computer system serving the office of Robert Gates, defence secretary, but declined to say who it believed was behind the attack.

Current and former officials have told the Financial Times an internal investigation has revealed that the incursion came from the People’s Liberation Army.

[...]

“The PLA has demonstrated the ability to conduct attacks that disable our system...and the ability in a conflict situation to re-enter and disrupt on a very large scale,” said a former official, who said the PLA had penetrated the networks of US defence companies and think-tanks.

Giochi di guerra

I cadetti delle accademie militari USA vengono sottoposti ogni anno a una sorta di guerra informatica contro la NSA.

I militari preparano una rete di computer simulando una zona di guerra, mentre la NSA cerca di entrare sfruttando le vulnerabilità dei sistemi. Le squadre dei cadetti cercano di difendersi riparando i bug e le vulnerabilità dei loro sistemi e svolgendo il loro lavoro senza commettere errori. A seconda degli sbagli commessi dai giovani militari la loro accademia perde punti, che possono però essere incrementati svolgendo i compiti assegnati dalla NSA.

Ne parla il Marine Corps Times:

Seven years ago, cadets at West Point began working with the NSA to create an exercise that would simulate conditions if the military were required to set up an Internet system in a foreign country — just as cyber-soldiers have done in Iraq. The NSA acts as the opposing force, known as the “red cell,” and spends a week trying to take down virtual networks set up by each of the military academies for the event.

Interessante notare come tutto lo sforzo si basi sull'hardening dei sistemi, piuttosto che su tecniche di attacco:

The cadets don’t do any hacking themselves — it’s all defense. And they don’t attack or work with the other academies.

La memoria corre - non senza una punta di nostalgia - a un noto film che ha segnato un'intera generazione di informatici.

Kyrgyzstan fuori dalla Rete per un DDoS

Il 2 Novembre scorso l'intera repubblica del Kyrgyzstan sarebbe stata completamente tagliata fuori da Internet a causa - si è saputo oggi - di un attacco Denial of Service ai danni dei principali provider. Lo riferisce un'agenzia di stampa russa.

L'attacco avrebbe motivazioni politiche:

The failure of the Republic's data networks occurred 12 hours before the start of an indefinite rally demanding resignation of the current president Kurmanbek Bakiev in Bishkek.

According to one of the versions, the hacker attacks were organized by special services that tried to hinder Kirghiz independent mass media. The attack on the providers' resources was made from servers outside the Republic.

Sicuramente i nodi kirghizi non saranno fra i più potenti, ma il semplice fatto che ancora oggi, nel 2006, ignoti criminali riescano a scollegare un intero Paese da Internet dovrebbe far riflettere.

Intellipedia, il wiki delle spie

Una delle principali critiche mosse nei confronti delle agenzie di sicurezza USA sarebbe la loro incapacità nel condividere le informazioni le une con le altre. NSA, FBI, Secret Service, CIA e via discorrendo non avrebbero - questa l'accusa, soprattutto post 11 Settembre - lo slancio necessario nell'informarsi a vicenda su informazioni potenzialmente rilevanti.

Il Dipartimento per la Sicurezza Nazionale (DHS - Department for Homeland Security) avrebbe dovuto svolgere le funzioni di raccordo per agevolare la collaborazione fra le singole agenzie, ma i suoi detrattori lo accusano di essere diventato un nuova super-agenzia, addirittura più burocratica delle prime.

Tuttavia, fra le azioni messe in atto per agevolare la comunicazione fra le agenzie, da pochi mesi esiste un sistema informatico del tutto identico alla nota Wikipedia, dove gli agenti collaborano per aggiungere e aggiornare schede su definizioni, personaggi, luoghi geografici e argomenti di interesse alla sicurezza nazionale. L'Intellipedia è raggiungibile solo da qualche migliaio di persone e non è visibile al pubblico.

A "top secret" Intellipedia system, currently available to the 16 agencies that make up the U.S. intelligence community, has grown to more than 28,000 pages and 3,600 registered users since its introduction on April 17. Less restrictive versions exist for "secret" and "sensitive but unclassified" material.

Se tutto va bene il sistema dovrebbe rendere più accessibili le informazioni di intelligence a chiunque ne abbia bisogno, minimizzando i rischi che queste finiscano in mano alla stampa. Per ora la cosa sembra funzionare, visto che dall'inaugurazione nell'aprile scorso la notizia è stata resa di pubblico dominio solo pochi giorni fa.

“Intellipedia,” as it is called, allows analysts to create a subject, then add their knowledge or documents to the “collaboration space,” [Richard Russell, deputy assistant director of national intelligence for information sharing and customer outreach at the office of the director of national intelligence] said at a conference sponsored by the Association for Enterprise Integration.

Intellipedia was created so “analysts in different agencies that work X or Y can go in and see what other people are doing on subject X or Y and actually add in their two cents worth ... or documents that they have,” Russell said.

SigInt, Echelon visto dal Canada

Quando si parla di Echelon si pensa quasi sempre agli Stati Uniti, NSA & Co. Il ruolo degli altri paesi appare minore, ma lo è davvero?

Vulnerabilità nel network dei servizi segreti USA

Se siete il CIO della vostra azienda e vi sentite tristi perché l'auditor ha appena scoperto buchi di sicurezza grossi come una casa nel vostro network, non vi preoccupate: siete in buona compagnia.

L'Inspector General del DHS Richard Skinner ha appena pubblicato tre diversi rapporti, compilati questo settembre, a conclusione di altrettante indagini che rivelano importanti carenze nelle misure di sicurezza informatica adottate dai servizi segreti statunitensi.
